About OLD QARASHEN

Formerly Old Qarashen village was called Dashqend.

Abandoned village Old Qarashen is founded in the Syuniq province of Armenia, in area of old Goris, 7-8 km north-east from Goris, on left side of Goris-Stepanakert highway, on side of gorge, surrounded by fertile fields. Climate is mild, water is few. Village has a few fountains with few water. In the south of village there are mineral fountains. Instead of old cave-houses and huts with soil roofs, new Qarashen village has comfortable houses which were built by stone and have roofs. Formerly village was called Dashqend. In 1831 village had 74, in 1897 628, in 1926 656, in 1939 661, in 1959 589, in 1970 505, in 1981 542, in 1989 493 Armenian inhabitants. There are residents in ancestors, who came from Khoy in 1829. They are ingaged in cattle breeding, cultivation of grain and feed culture, vegetable cultivation, tobacco-workering, beet formering. Village has an eight-year school, culture house, library, kino, automatic telephone exchange, nursery school, consumer services pavilion, medical center, bath. According to taxpayer in 1781 village gave Tatev monastery 3300 minted backyard (Matenadaran, manuscript N 1488, page 215(a)). Therefore, H. Bahatryan’s evidence, that this village was founded after 1825, (statistics of Arcakh, “Nor-Dar”, N 34, 1885), must understand, that Qarashen old village was destroyed and then in 1825 recovered.  In the south of village there is bridge made in 1927. Thereabouts there are Hatkashen and Khachen villages. Here were born Armenian bard Ata Sayilyan (1852-1942), philological sciences’ doctor, professor Alexandr Margaryan (1924-2001), historical sciences’ doctor, professor Sergey Amiryan.
